Emmy Nominated Andy Garcia and actress Julianna Margulies portray a married couple from City Island in this 2010 movie about a couple apparently fixed in a groove of life without excitement. The movie, made in 2009, shows what a dysfunctional family of people who can't seem to bring themselves to tell even the simplest truth to one another. For example, Garcia's character, Vince Rizzo, a corrections officer by day, wants to become a Hollywood star so he's been taking acting classes no one knows about.
At the 2009 famous Tribeca Film Festival, where a lot of films make their debut, this movie won the audience award. This is the award given to films that are favorites of those viewing the films for the first time, both everyday people and critics are allowed to vote for this award. The distributors take their movies to these film festivals in order to generate publicity and a name for the film. People seemed to identify and love this quirky little film in which no one likes to tell the truth.
Each of the members of this dysfunctional family is hiding a secret that they believe if revealed, would destroy one another and the very foundation of their family. The father of the family, Garcia of the Ocean's films, secretly wants to be an actor and takes a weekly acting class. His wife, Joyce, played by Margulies of the Good Wife, is busy playing detective because she believes her husband is cheating on her rather than plotting a big Hollywood career.
The family has a collage-attending daughter, played by Dominik Garca-Lorido, of the Lost City, who is also hiding a secret, she is a stripper. Their young, teenage son, played by Ezra Miller, from Californication, has a weird fetish that has something to do with their 300 lb neighbor. Then there is the elder Rizzo's drama coach, played by Emmy Award Winner, Alan Arkin of Little Miss Sunshine, who also has a few secrets he's hiding.
What makes the movie interesting and the big reason for 'why today?' is because the elder Rizzo became inspired by one of his acting exercises, so much so that he decided to find his long-lost son, Tony, played by Steven Strait from 10,000 BC. Having a long-lost son who happens to be an ex-con throws fire on an already supercharged situation and of course, hilarity ensues.
Emily Mortimer of the movie Shutter Island gives a performance of the elder Rizzo's confidant and acting partner. Mortimer and Garcia's chemistry is almost perfect in this quirky and almost always funny movie for the most laughs and best chemistry, money is on Margulies' and Garcia. They play a typical New York married couple whose miscommunications and constant love-hate yelling will steal the show.
The movie's namesake is a real live place just outside of the Bronx's and it is teaming with tradition. There are basically no 'outsiders' in the tiny former fishing village and parents hand down their houses from generation to generation. People outside of Manhattan and the Bronx don't know of this beautiful little community, that is, until now.
This movie came out in April of 2010 and the Blu-Ray and DVD release date is scheduled for August 24, 2010. In addition to his acting duties, Andy Garcia is also one of the many producers, joining several co-producers and executive producers. The film was written and directed, as a labor of love by Raymond De Felitta.
