Getting the Perfect Headshot

By Donna Obrien

Becoming an actor is no easy task. It all depends on how you start your career. To begin with, you'll need a headshot. Every movie, TV, or theater actor has one because it serves as the introduction and give the most important first impression. Before you can even walk in the door, you'll want to establish a connection with the agent or casting director.

You will find the internet really helpful in getting your perfect headshot. There are a lot of resources and information regarding the many photographers in the business. Just give their websites a visit to familiarize yourself with their work. When searching, you'll also need to select a suitable location for the photo shoot. No need to go all the way to New York just to get a great headshot because there are good photographers all over the country. You might even find one in your hometown. Look into local talent agencies, too; find an honest, licensed agency and talk to them about doing your headshots.

After doing your research, list of your top five favorite photographers and then contact each one of them. Tell them what you want your headshot to be like and discuss it properly so that it won't be a waste of time and money. You also need to specify the number of photos to be taken during the shoot as well as the number of poses you'll want to do. Another thing to note is the type of the headshot, whether it is commercial or theatrical. For added effect, you may also need to have your hair and make-up done on the set. The most important factor is the price. If the photographer fails to address your specifications for the headshot, best be on your way and continue your search.

Once you have selected your photographer, schedule for the shoot. Choose the most appropriate clothing to wear on the set. Establish the look you are aiming for after doing the necessary arrangements with the photographer. To be on the safe side, you might want to cover both casual and formal attire, or even the serious and smiling looks. This will give you more options in picking out the best headshot.

Talk with the photographer and make sure you do your part, especially with the hair and make-up. You can also suggest some wardrobe and poses. Coordination with the photographer is the key and always keep your options open.

Have fun while you're at it. Always remember that you're out to impress. You should also be open to the photographer's suggestions because he or she knows what's best for you.

You also might want to get your hair styled or cut before the session because there are some that will not cover hair and make-up. Moreover, try bringing a family member or friend with you on the shoot just to be safe. These photographers wouldn't mind having someone sitting in.

Be comfortable with what you're doing. If ever the photographer suddenly demands that you take your clothes off, it's best that you leave the set immediately and get another photographer. Never let yourself be forced into doing something you don't want to do.
