Frogger is an arcade classic from the 1980s which is still very popular today as a remembrance of the Golden age of the other games. Released by the company can add me in 1981, Frogger quickly became a phenomenon due to its highly addictive, simple gameplay.
The game's opening tune has become a cult classic, based on the Japanese children's song called Iny No Omawarisan (The Dog Policeman). This song has been covered by a variety of bands. The game was originally called highway crossing frog but this was changed because the designers did not believe the game was just about crossing highways.
In Frogger the player starts with three lives and guides a frog from a grassy lawn across a highway full of speeding cars and trucks. They must then jump across a river hull of crocodile's, turtles and logs. Finally, the player must successfully get each frog onto one of the lily pads - extra points are rewarded for landing on a fly.
When the player successfully get five frogs onto five empty lily pads he or she progresses to the next level which is more difficult than the last. There are many ways for Frogger to meet an untimely end including being squashed by a vehicle, being eaten by a crocodile, drowning by falling into the water (ironically for a frog) or running out of time.
Frogger was also successful Saturday morning cartoon at the height of its popularity. It was also famously parodied in the Seinfeld episode "the Frogger" when Jerry Seinfeld and George Constanza visit a burger joint they used to frequent as teenagers.
They find that the Frogger machine which George set a high score on his remarkably still there and what is more his initials are still entered in the top position. George then buys the machine and tries to get it home without losing power by hooking it up cheap portable batteries. In a now classic parody of the game he tries to navigate "the frog" across a busy highway for the game is destroyed by a truck!
While you once the state has to pay a quarter to play, now you can enjoy Froogger for free online. Try it yourself and see why it is remembered as such a classic game!
